14 Jun MLB Infirmary Report: Week 11
By: Shane Thompson
By this time in the season you know full well that injuries are piling up around MLB and this week we have 5 more players to discuss. You can also tune into the MLB Diamond Dash podcast to hear a full break down of the injuries as well as Fantasy Baseball waiver wire moves, weekend series match ups and Daily Fantasy Sports. The show is live Wednesday, June 14th at 3pm EST and can be listened to live or as a recorded podcast right here.
1) Ryan Braun – MIL
He’s been apart of trade talks dating back to last season but now that they’re a contender, upper management may reconsider. They have young, rising stars such as Lewis Brinson and Keon Broxton. Braun remains out with a calf injury but has been seen running sprints at ¾ speed and it’s been reported that he is pain free. It’s uncertain as to when he’s expected to return from the DL. It will be very interesting to see what the Brewers decide to do with Braun come late July, seeing that they shouldn’t be in first place for much longer. If and when Braun gets traded, he will be a great addition to any ball club.
2) Kyle Hendricks – CHC
The reigning CY young award winner has had plenty of ups and downs this season. He got off to a rocky start due to his inability to locate pitches early and often in the count. He racked up a few wins and quality starts in a row even though he had been dealing with right hand tendinitis. He was originally expected to be off the DL after ten days until he felt discomfort during a throwing session on Tuesday. It has been a sluggish 2017 start for the Chicago Cubs and not only are they one of the worst hitting teams hitting with runners in scoring position, but their starting pitching is lacking effectiveness and not pitching deep into ball games. The Cubs need to get a healthy Hendricks back on the mound if they want to get back to the post season.
3) Jean Segura – SEA
Seeing a Seattle Mariners player landing on the DL seems like a rarity this year. The icing on the cake is that a day after they signed this stud shortstop to a 5 year, $70 million dollar contract, he suffered a high ankle sprain. He has been running and taking BP but is a ways away from rejoining the big league club. He has been an underrated shortstop for a few years now and was off to a great start until landing on the shelf. He plays great defense, runs the bases well and provides a top of the order bat for these Mariners. Needless to say, with a 2nd DL stint now for Segura, the nightmare season continues for Seattle and their newly acquired SS.
4) Jonathan Villar – MIL
Villar has been placed on the DL with a lower back strain. Despite his team being one of the biggest surprises in the early season, he has been quite the opposite. The career highs of 60 extra base hits and 62 stolen bases in 2016 are starting to look like a flash in the pan. He’s batting .213 and lacking plate discipline. As a fantasy baseball owner, it’s too early to let go of a middle infielder with possible value in the speed department. If you’re a Brewers fan, you cannot help being disappointed with his production this season.
5) Danny Salazar – CLE
Salazar was once a prized possession of the Cleveland Indians. Now he has turned into a massive headache. Although they got to the World Series last year, and are still in contention this year, Salazar has had very little impact on them since the first half of 2016. He has very good stuff but has been inconsistent on the mound in 2017, and has dealt with random injuries over the last 2 seasons. Most people believe that if he was healthy, the Indians would’ve won the World Series last year and would be in first place right now.
