MLB Infirmary Report: Week 12

MLB Infirmary Report: Week 12

By: Shane Thompson

Welcome to the week 12 MLB Infirmary Report. I discuss key injuries and the impact they have on their teams. We discuss these injuries along with fantasy baseball waiver wire moves, up coming weekend series and more on the MLB Diamond Dash Podcast which you can listen to right hereThe show goes live Wednesday, June 21st at 3pm EST but the recorded version can be listened to at anytime. Enjoy!

Zack Cozart- Cincinatti Reds, Shortstop

Cozart was placed on the DL on Sunday, June 18th with a strained quad. Jose Peraza and Arismendy Alcantara will split time at shortstop while Scooter Gennett will fill in the void for second base. It’s unclear when he is expected to return to the field; which is unfortunate because he is slashing an average of .320 with 9 home runs, 33 runs batted in and 39 runs scored in 58 games. Those numbers are very solid especially for a shortstop that’s in a contract year. There isn’t much value in Peraza when comparing him to Cozart. Peraza’s value is more so as a speed threat.

Lance McCullers- Houston Astros, Starting Pitcher

McCullers was placed on the DL on Monday, June 12th with back discomfort. David Paulino and Frances Martes have stepped in for McCullers until he’s expected to return to Seattle this weekend. Lance has had a stellar first half prior to landing on the shelf with six wins, 2.58 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 89 punch outs. Even with McCullers coming back to the rotation, Martes is a highly touted prospect and has huge upside if they continually give him opportunities.

Michael Brantley- Cleveland Indians, Outfield

Brantley was placed on the DL on Monday, June 19th with a right ankle sprain. This injury has been bothering him since early May. The Indians are playing it “better safe than sorry” when it comes to Brantley, especially with his history of injuries. He’s hitting .296 with 5 home runs, 28 runs batted in and a .792 OPS. These numbers are not as impressive as they once were for Brantley, but he will still be missed in this Indians lineup. Daniel Robertson will be getting the majority of the reps in left field and only has low risk/high reward in Draft Kings and FanDuel formats.

CC Sabathia- New York Yankees, Starting Pitcher

C.C. was placed on the DL on Thursday, June 16th with a strained left hamstring. He was initially hurt two days prior when facing the Los Angeles Angels and is expected to be out until the final week of the all-star break. Luis Cessa and Chad Green are expected to get the bulk of opportunities in Sabathia’s absence. He was pitching very well up until the injury with a 7-2 record, 3.46 ERA and 6 quality starts. Chad Green and Cessa are nothing more than pitching streamers especially in a hitter friendly ballpark.

Matt Shoemaker- LA Angels, Starting Pitcher

Shoemaker headed to the DL on Saturday, June 17th due to a strained right forearm. He missed his usual day-after bullpen start after being lifted early in Wednesday’s contest and is expected to be back on June 27th. Parker Bridewell is expected to start for Shoemaker against the New York Yankees. “Shoe” has had his ups and downs this year as he posts a 4.52 ERA with 6 wins and 5 quality starts. His K’s/9 are down much more than usual. Parker Bridewell will most likely only have one start before getting sent down which provides little value up to this point. It also doesn’t help that he’s facing a high octane offense in a hitter friendly ballpark.
