23 Aug MLB Injury Report: 8/21/17-8/28/17
By: Shane Thompson
We have a star studded list of players on the DL this week; three SP and two very talented young hitters. Check out the MLB Diamond Dash Podcast by clicking the red text. We break down these injuries in more detail, while also discussing playoff races and Daily Fantasy Sports.
Max Scherzer, SP, WSH
This top tier pitcher was placed on the DL August 18th, retroactive to the 15th with left neck inflammation. Matt Grace has taken his spot in the rotation. This injury has been ongoing all season long and there’s no timetable for his return. The Washington Nationals have run away with the division, so don’t expect them to rush him back. He will likely be out for at least 2 to 3 weeks. He was having another CY Young type season with 220 strikeouts in only 165 innings. The 2.25ERA to go with a 0.85WHIP jumps right off the charts.
Jon Lester, SP,CHC
Lester was diagnosed with shoulder fatigue and left lat tightness which put him on the disabled list on August 18th. He is only expected to miss a start or two according to Theo Epstein. Mike Montgomery was removed from his bullpen role to join the rotation. A disaster season for Lester after being dominate last season makes this situation even worse. He has a 4.37ERA with a 1.27WHIP and hasn’t looked like himself all season. They need him now more than ever.
Yu Darvish, SP, LAD
Back tightness has been an issue for Darvish this season and with the 20 game lead the Los Angeles Dodgers have, they decided to put him on the shelf on August 19th. This is only a precautionary move. He threw a bullpen session on Monday and reported no setbacks. Brock Stewart has been in the rotation for the time being. Darvish has been pretty Darvish esc this season, but since arriving in LA, he has taken his game to a whole new level. He has 8 wins with 170 punch outs in 155 innings this season.
Miguel Sano, 3B/OF, MIN
Sano was placed on the DL on August 20th with a stress reaction in his left shin. There’s no timetable for his return and the organization is worried that it might be more serious than a short stint without playing. Ehire Adrianza has been filling the void at the hot corner. This is obviously bad news for the ball club as they continue the pursuit of a wild card postseason birth. He is a key part of their offense along with their young core coming up. He has 28 homers, 77 runs batted in and an .870OPS.
Willson Contreras, C, CHC
Willson landed on the shelf on August 9th with a hamstring strain and the timetable for him to return is within the next 2 to 3 weeks. Alex Avila has been handling the catching duties in his absence. Contreras was coming into his own at a rapid pace once they DFA’d Miguel Montero. Contreras has 20 doubles, 21 home runs to go with a .861OPS. Clearly his bat and presence has been missed.
