A List of 2 start SP, as heard today on The SportsCrew Radio Network

Jacob Degrom – NYM:  WSH, @ATL

  • he has made 3 starts so far this season and the overall numbers look good with 2 wins, 3.06 ERA and more than a K per inning… in his most recent start against the Marlins he did allow 4 ER in 6 innings of work, but did have a k per inning still…
  • these 2 starts this week are huge…facing off against 2 competitive divisional foes… DeGrom already has beaten washington this season in washington but has yet to face the Braves…. the start vs the Braves will be in ATL which has proven to be a very hitter friendly ballpark since it opened last year and the Braves currently have one of the best offenses in all of baseball..
  • by no means is either start a good match up for DeGrom, but he’s an ace and is expected to go out there and win these big games…

Dallas Kuechel – HOU: @SEA, @CWS

  • he hasn’t gotten off to the best of starts so far this season, but has 2 pretty solid matchups this week that should help him get back on track…
  • his biggest issue has been his command in the early going, walking 9 batters in just 15 innings of work…
  • the match up in SEA is the tougher of the 2 this week, but SEA is a pitcher friendly ball park and they have a lot of impact LH bats which can be neutralized by the lefty throwing Kuechel
  • with the white sox, although their ball park is a hitters haven, the skill level and lack experience in their lineup should bode well for Kuechel who should be able to exploit their hitters

Luis Castillo – CIN: @MIL, @STL

  • Castillo has been hit around very hard in the early going
  • he was being touted as the next big ace around MLB, and although its still early, its possible that many people may have jumped the gun
  • he is striking out less than a hitter per inning, but what jumps out the most to me is the 13 ER in 16 innings of work and the 4 HR allowed in 3 starts…
  • neither matchup this week is favorable for Castillo, as both teams are strong offensively, but also are familiar with castillo, seeing him a number of times last season
  • i do believe he has the skill set to be a star, and the stuff is still there, but he will have to turn it around fast or risk being one of the biggest busts of 2018

Blake Snell –  TB: TEX, MIN

  • Snell has had 2 amazing starts this season and 1 dreadful one… he held the red sox scoreless in his first start, got beaten around by the yankees in his 2nd start, not getting out of the 3rd inning, but bounced back beautifully in his most recent start on the road vs the White Sox recording 10 K’s in 6 innings of work and picked up his first win of the season
  • i love the K rate thus far, but the walk rate is very scary and will lead to more games like the one he had vs the Yankees….hes allowed 10 walks in just 15 innings of work so far this year
  • his matchups this week are intriguing for sure… they’re both at home, one against a banged up Texas rangers ball club, and the other against a twins ball club who hasn’t quite found their stride offensively yet, they currently sit in the middle of the pack in runs scored in the american league ranks

Luis Severino – NYY:  MIA, TOR

  • Severino is one of the top pitchers in the American League, but is coming off a rough start in his most recent outing… the Red Sox beat up on him early and often in Fenway park…to be fair, it was incredibly cold that evening and it looked like Sevy was off right from the get go… there is also talk about the fact that he may have been tipping his pitches, something the Yankees will of course rectify…
  • I love his matchup against the Marlins to start off the week, he has a chance to go deep into the game, record double digit K’s and pick up the win…his second start of the week will definitely be more tough against the division rival blue jays, but Sevy did shut Toronto down earlier this season already in Toronto, so there should be optimism surrounding his start in NY this weekend…
