24 Feb What a blast: The Yankees’ 1st Spring Training Game Highlights
By: Chris Northrop
Aaron Judge went 1-2 and skyrocketed a homerun in the fifth inning, answering a big question in his first Spring Training game! After such a poor performance at the plate to end 2016, Yankee fans cheered to see his power flash again!
Didi Gregorius hit a homerun in his first at-bat of Spring Training, as did Kyle Higashioka. It was bombs away in George M. Steinbrenner Field today as the Yankees hammered out 11 hits against Phillies pitching. Matt Holliday joined in with a pair of singles.
There was no shortage of extra base hits on the afternoon from the young guns: Clint Frazier and Dustin Fowler, legged out triples in the game and Miguel Andujar hit a double in the 8th inning. Rob Refsnyder singled in a run as well. Gleyber Torres went 0-2 with a sacrifice fly. Greg Bird went 0-2. The baby bombers were responsible for most of the run production on the day.
The Yankees used the following pitchers:
Bryan Mitchell – 2 IP – didn’t allow a runner
Tyler Clippard – 1 IP – didn’t allow a runner
Tommy Layne – 1 IP – didn’t allow a runner
Luis Cessa – 2 IP – didn’t allow a runner
Jordan Montgomery – 2 IP gave up 1st base hit to the Phillies
Giovanny Gallegos – 1 IP – gave up 2 solo homeruns, 3 hits
The defense was not spectacular as there were two errors on the day; the first on Ji-Man Choi at 1B on a throw from Ruben Tejada at 2B trying to complete a double play. Gleyber Torres also committed an error to 1B, throwing wide of Choi.
The Yankees won 9-4 with every indication that they will hit, veterans and young guns alike. Three homeruns on the day were a promise of power to come!
